Calling all alumni! The Rathskeller, affectionately known as the “Rat,” has transformed into a new pub space on campus called 1908. In celebration of the transformation, the Office of Alumni Engagement Affinity Group Network, in conjunction with the Black Alumni Advisory Council (BAAC), is hosting a throwback game night on March 14, 2025, at 1908 and we’d love for you to join us!
“When we talk to alumni about their time on campus, one location often comes up – the Rathskeller, otherwise known as the ‘Rat’,” says Jeanne Marano, assistant vice president for Annual Giving and Alumni Engagement. “Now that the space has been updated, we’re excited to welcome alums back. You need to see it to believe it!”
This event is open to all alumni. Come together to celebrate the new and reminisce about the old. It’s a perfect chance to come back and learn about the affinity network. Connect with members of the many groups to learn more about their activities and how you can be involved:

“I’m eager to reunite with fellow alumni and relive the cherished memories at the Rat—now known as the 1908 Pub—during game night!” says Domonique Walker ’09, co-chair of the Signature Events Committee of the BAAC. “I’m looking forward to playing spades, singing karaoke and catching up with old friends and colleagues!”
This special gathering offers a unique opportunity to reconnect with former classmates, network, reminisce about past experiences and witness the transformation of a cherished campus landmark. Attendees can look forward to an evening filled with nostalgia, entertainment and a chance to create new memories in a sentimental campus location.
“Montclair State has always been a special place for me because of the lifelong connections I made here,” adds Clayton Cole ’10, co-chair of the Signature Events Committee of the BAAC. “The Rathskeller holds so many great memories, and I look forward to seeing alumni come together to celebrate and reconnect. This event is a perfect way to honor our shared experiences, build new connections, and keep our alumni community strong.”
The original Rathskeller was a vibrant hub for students, offering a lively atmosphere for socializing and relaxation. The reintroduction of the pub offers current students a return to those cherished times, providing a modern space where students can unwind and connect. The space has been renovated and equipped with virtual entertainment games, pool tables and multiple lounging locations for group gatherings. This iconic establishment, located on the first floor of the Student Center, officially reopened its doors on September 12, 2024.
The 1908 Pub offers a diverse menu focusing on a pub and pizza theme, including a selection of non-alcoholic mocktail beverages. To ensure responsible enjoyment, the pub enforces a two-alcoholic drink maximum and a strict wristband policy. These measures have been well-received, creating an inclusive environment.
“Students have been asking for a new location to go to for late night and weekend dining,” says Brian Conway, Dining Director for Gourmet Dining. “We’ve got a full house every night.”
At the alumni gathering, there will be board games, cards, virtual Top Golf, food and drinks, karaoke and a night full of memories waiting for you. Whether you come for the games, learning about our networks or just to grab some food and catch up, you won’t want to miss this!
